Power is delightful, and absolute power should be absolutely delightful--but
not when you're the most powerful man on earth and the place is ticking like a time bomb.
Jack Ryan, CIA warrior turned U.S. president, is the man in the hot seat, and in this vast
thriller he's up to his nostrils in crazed Asian warlords, Russian thugs, nukes that
won't stay put, and authentic, up-to-the-nanosecond technology as complex as the characters'
motives are simple. Quick, do you know how to reprogram the software in an Aegis missile
seekerhead? Well, if you're Jack Ryan, you'd better find someone who does, or an incoming
ballistic may rain fallout on your parade. Bad for reelection prospects. "You know,
I don't really like this job very much," Ryan complains to his aide Arnie van Damm, who replies,
"Ain't supposed to be fun, Jack." ... When you've got a Tom Clancy novel in hand, who needs
action movies? -- Tim Appelo

Razio Yamata is one of Japan's most influential industrialists, and part of a relatively
small group of authority who wield tremendous authority in the Pacific Rim's economic powerhouse.
He has devised a plan to cripple the American greatness, humble the U.S. military, and
elevate Japan to a position of dominance on the world stage. Yamata's motivation lies in
his desire to pay off a Debt of Honor to his parents and to the country he feels is
responsible for their deaths: America. All he needs is a catalyst to set his plan in motion.
When the faulty gas tank on one Tennessee family's car leads to their fiery death, an
opportunistic U.S. congressman uses the occasion to rush a new trade law through the system.
The law is designed to squeeze Japan economically. Instead, it provides Yamata with the
leverage he needs to put his plan into action. As Yamata's plan begins to unfold, it
becomes clear to the world that someone is launching a fully integrated operation against
the United States. There's only one man to find out who the culprit is: Jack Ryan, the new
president's National Security Advisor.

Tom Clancy goes to the White House in this thriller of political terror and global disaster.
The American political situation takes a disturbing turn as the President, Congress, and
Supreme Court are obliterated when a Japanese terrorist lands a 747 on the Capitol.
Meanwhile the Iranians are unleashing an Ebola virus threat on the country. Jack Ryan,
CIA agent, is cast in the middle of this maelstrom. Because of a recent sex scandal,
Ryan was appointed vice president, a slot he doesn't hold for long when he lands in the
Chief Executive's chair. He goes after the Iranians and then tries to piece together the
country and his life the only way he knows how--with a fury that we've grown accustomed
to in Clancy's intricate, detailed, and accurate stories of warfare and intrigue.

Clark (a.k.a. Rainbow Six) has left the CIA to create an England-based organization
code-named "Rainbow." Its mission: deploy an elite squad of American operatives combined
with handpicked British, French, and German agents to stop terrorism in its tracks.
Rainbow's emergence could not be more timely: in quick succession, the force diffuses
three attempted terrorist actions. But Clark becomes suspicious when Russian agents
suddenly show interest in Rainbow's work.
Rainbow Six appeals on all the levels that Clancy fans could hope for. The Rainbow operatives,
from Navy SEALs to German mountain-leader school graduates, are rendered to inspire with their
physical and mental prowess. The book is infatuated with the latest gadgets for scrambling,
transmitting, and decoding secrets. And, in a carefully woven narrative that simultaneously
traces the Rainbow team, a former KGB agent named Popov, the Australian Olympic security team,
and a sinister group of American scientists, Clancy artfully reveals the mystery of "Shiva" at
the center of the novel. How does Clark measure up against Jack Ryan? He may be the perfect hero
for a world with hidden villains. -- Patrick O'Kelley

Long before he was President or head of the CIA, before he fought terrorist attacks
on the Super Bowl or the White House, even before a submarine named Red October made its
perilous way across the Atlantic, Jack Ryan was an historian, teacher, and recent ex-Marine
temporarily living in England while researching a book. A series of deadly encounters with
an IRA splinter group had brought him to the attention of the CIA's Deputy Director,
Vice Admiral James Greer-as well as his counterpart with the British SIS,
Sir Basil Charleston-and when Greer asked him if he wanted to come aboard as a freelance
analyst, Jack was quick to accept. The opportunity was irresistible, and he was sure he
could fit it in with the rest of his work.
And then Jack forgot all about the rest of his work, because one of his first assignments
was to help debrief a high-level Soviet defector, and the defector told an amazing tale:
Top Soviet officials, including Yuri Andropov, were planning to assassinate the Pope,
John Paul II.
Could it be true? As the days and weeks go by, Ryan must battle, first to try to confirm
the plot, and then to prevent it, but this is a brave new world, and nothing he has done
up to now has prepared him for the lethal game of cat-and-mouse that is the Soviet Union
versus the United States. In the end, it will be not just the Pope's life but the stability
of the Western world that is at stake. . . and it may already be too late for a novice CIA
analyst to do anything about it.
"Clancy creates not only compelling characters but frighteningly topical situations and
heart-stopping action," wrote The Washington Post about The Bear and the Dragon.
"Among the handful of superstars, Clancy still reigns, and he is not likely to be dethroned
any time soon." These words were never truer than about the remarkable pages of his
breathtaking new novel. This is Clancy at his best-and there is none better.

This book is amazing in scope, depth, and detail. Just the logistics alone of writing a war
between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. seemed like an impossible task, but Clancy managed to pull
it off brilliantly. This book is a page turner. Military buffs will love the detail and
dissection of the military strategies and tech info on all sorts of equipment.

THIS is the book that should have been made into an epic film. -- Reviewer: Andy Williamson

Once again, Tom Clancy manages to add new twists to the alternate U.S. history he initiated in
The Hunt for Red October. In The Sum of All Fears, the center of conflict is the perpetual hot
spot the Mideast, where a nuclear weapon falls into the hands of terrorists just as peace seems
possible. Clancy realistically paints an almost unthinkable scenario--the bomb is planted on
American soil in the midst of an escalation in tension with the Soviet Union; the terrorists hope
to rekindle cold war animosity and prevent reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.
Despite such a dramatic story line, Clancy doesn't neglect the individuals who drive his tale.
Jack Ryan's problems are as much domestic as they are part of the international crisis that is
the ostensible narrative: National Security Director Elizabeth Elliot has the president's ear,
and she has convinced him that Ryan's ethics are questionable. She hints at marital infidelity
and an insider-trading scandal. Of course, both accusations are false, but her arguments have
enough evidence behind them (e.g. some photographs of an innocent embrace with a friend) to
cause a strain in the Ryans' marriage and a flurry of media attention. While "Mr. Clark" tracks
the terrorists, he also provides some needed intelligence to heal the Ryan family.
The Sum of All Fears is the stuff of nightmares but contains enough verisimilitude to terrify
sober minds. Ryan has matured into a complex protagonist as Clancy's writing, too, has matured.
Ryan is plagued by stress and self-doubts that test even his dauntless moral compass and make
him a more interesting subject for readers' attention. Those fascinated by military hardware,
from nuclear submarines to atomic weapons, will find almost enough here to start their own army.
And Clancy's understanding of international politics seems chillingly correct. -- Patrick O'Kelley

In 'Without Remorse,' Tom Clancy tells us the story of CIA legend Mr. Clark.
'Remorse' Takes place during the frantic days of the Vietnam War when ex-Navy seal
John Kelly is content to live a solitary life after the death of his wife and child.
When a new friend of Kelly's is brutally murdered and he himself injured, he becomes
John Clark and takes the law into his own hands. While Clark's rampage is in full
swing in Baltimore, a downed Mormon pilot is taken prisoner in Vietnam.
The top brass are adamant that this pilot be brought back before he is forced to
give away defense secrets. Clark is called in and sent back to battle for one final
mission. The results of both Clark's military mission and his destructive personal
vendetta make this a thriller in the great Clancy tradition. 'Without Remorse' sets
the stage for the 'Jack Ryan' novels in which John Clark is a major character and is
another thrill-filled novel from the master. -- Reviewer: Cody Carlson

Computer savvy teens, a war game gone awry, and good old-fashioned intrigue are the elements
of The Deadliest Game, a high-octane episode in Tom Clancy's wildly popular teen series
Net Force. Clancy and co-author Steve Pieczenik envision a futuristic society where
people enliven their dull lives with intense virtual experiences. One of the most
favored of these virtual realities is a medieval war game called Sarxos. Players leave
their physical bodies at home while an implant in their head carries them through their
computer to the virtual Dominion of Sarxos, a land where they may be anyone-- from a
reigning warlord to a practicing hedge-wizard. But when players who are winning too
many battles in Sarxos start getting stalked and attacked in the real world, it becomes
clear that one player has begun taking the game far too seriously. ...
In Net Force, Tom Clancy has created a cyber-thrilling series that will transition into
the next millennium with ease. The breathless action and abrupt plot transitions between
the real world and virtual reality will fascinate teen computer fiends and young video

This Tom Clancy real-life military thriller is more nuanced than his novels, because
its object is not simply to dramatize armed conflict but to relate the life lessons
of his source, jet-pilot-turned-Desert-Storm-air-commander General Chuck Horner.
Horner is no war cheerleader like General "Buck" Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove. He loathes
the arrogance of the backwards, nuke-happy Strategic Air Command and the madly
out-of-touch Vietnam War planner Robert McNamara. McNamara confesses his folly in two
books, Argument Without End and In Retrospect, but Horner's you-are-there account more
vividly demonstrates Vietnam's grim lessons. He flew an F-105 Thunderbird "Thud"
fighter in the Wild Weasels, the unit with the highest medals-per-aircrew ratio, knew
pilots who were stoned to death by villagers, and realized all the bombing did zero good.
"All we really had to do was befriend Ho," says Horner sensibly. "Seems he wasn't part of
a monolithic Communist plot, and hated the Chinese more than anything else." Horner is
savvy about the screwups, the achievements, and the political maneuvering in and after
the Gulf War, as leaders and branches of service battled for PR victories. His idea of
a hero is Boomer McBroom's pilot Captain Gentner Drummond, who won a Flying Cross medal
for refusing AWACS orders to down a jet that turned out to be a Saudi ally. Horner thinks
the interservice and international cooperation in the Gulf War was way better than in
Vietnam, but there's ample room for improvement. The action scenes aren't quite as
brilliant as those in Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, but Clancy fans will
find plenty to admire. Horner's improbable survival of a 150-m.p.h. near-crash in
Libya in 1962 belongs in a Tom Clancy film. -- Tim Appelo

From Booklist: Alexander, a retired army colonel and researcher on nonlethal
weapons, covers the nonclassified material on his subject in a way that already
has drawn praise from fellow officers. His study of the ways of taking out
belligerents without the intent of killing them (at least on the spot) should
grab and impress thriller readers, techie fandom in general, and serious students of
military affairs, too. Coverage of this subject in relatively few pages makes the
book a model of conciseness and completeness, and it is well organized, to boot.
Alexander whets appetites in the beginning with some frightening speculations
about possible conflicts; reviews chemical, biological, and electronic weapons
and their limitations and tactics; and considers some daunting implications.
Merely operating those weapons, let alone judging when to operate them, is going
to demand a more intelligent breed of soldier, which isn't a new request, but . . .
Highly recommended. -- Roland Green

Tom Clancy's latest love-letter to the military-industrial complex focuses on the
Army--and Fred Franks, a general who helped smash Iraq in the Gulf War. In this first
volume of a series on the intricacies of military command, Clancy traces the organizational
success story of the U.S. Army's rise from the slough of Vietnam to the heights of
victory in the Persian Gulf. In 1972, the Army lacked proper discipline, training,
weapons, and doctrine; all these would be overhauled in the next 15 years. For those
readers keen on such nuts and bolts, the book will be fascinating. But the book
truly sparkles when Franks tells his story. A "tanker" who lost a foot in the invasion
of Cambodia, he is a man of great courage, thoughtfulness, and integrity. One cannot
help but wince when a civilian tells him, "You and those boys did that for nothing."
And for all the acronyms and military history, that is what this book is about:
healing the wounds Vietnam inflicted. "But this time [the Gulf War], it was going to
end differently. They all would see to that."

Shadow Warriors is the third of Tom Clancy's commander books, and this time
around Clancy teams up with General Carl Stiner, retired, to recount the recent
history of U.S. Special Forces. Clancy notes that while Special Forces played
important roles in World War II and Vietnam, the U.S. military has always been
uncomfortable with "elites" and their unconventional methods and thus tended to
view them primarily as a "sideshow." However, in 1980 when 53 Americans became
hostages in Tehran, it became painfully clear that the conventional military
tactics of the day, aimed at countering the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe,
simply could not deal with this new kind of threat. Most of the book revolves
around Stiner's military career: its beginning in the late '50s, his tour in Vietnam
as a Green Beret, various assignments in the Middle East, and his final stint as
commander of SOCOM (U.S. Special Operations Command). Particularly interesting are
Stiner's firsthand accounts of the Achille Lauro hostage rescue, the invasion of
Panama, and operations in Desert Storm. Clancy fills in and adds context to Stiner's
career and to the Special Forces themselves, including short stories of the Jedburgh
teams in World War II and the formation of the Green Berets in the early '60s. Though
at times disjointed, the result is a fascinating and timely glimpse into the evolution
of U.S. Special Forces. -- Harry C. Edwards

Midwest Book Review
In 1942, fresh from the U. S. Naval Academy, young ensign Bill Ruhe went to war in
the Pacific in submarines, or "boats" as they were called by the men who sailed them.
War In The Boats: My WWII Submarine Battles grew out of a journal he surreptitiously
kept, recording eight tense, action-filled patrols against the Japanese in the
South Pacific. With the variety of his missions and types of boats he served on,
Ruhe's experiences encompass those of almost every U. S. submariner in the Pacific
theater. War In The Boats chronicles not only the progress of the war, but also
the effect submarine warfare had on a tightly knit group of men. While
War In The Boats is one of the most detailed descriptions of factual naval
warfare, the combat actions never overshadow the impact they had on the combatants
themselves. War In The Boats is a unique "window in time" into one of the fiercely
fought, critically important, yet largely unknown, aspects of war in the Pacific.
