LegalEagle pressed south past Marianna, found a field on fire and thermalled up to 5700'. He announced that over the radio, and the Russia tried to reach the spot. However Frank was too low and was forced to land out at Marianna. Lee Robinson retrieved him with an aerial tow and no damage was done.
LegalEagle continued south to Helena at altitudes from 4000' to 5000' and reached HEE at about 3:30 PM. Thermalling up to 5200', he headed for the Helena bridge over the Mississippi. His plan was to take one of those Jim Hendrix pictures of the Helena bridge. However, there was a big dark cloud over the area and a lightning bolt hit a sand bar about 1/4 mile upstream from the bridge!
Not being a dumb Eagle, we snapped a couple of pictures of the bridge from the west; a picture of Helena, and got the hell out of there.
LegalEagle reached HEE and thermalled up to about 4700'. However the clouds were getting darker, the haze thicker, and some high cirrus were blocking the sun. The Eagle pushed here nose over and skedaddled north on a bee-line for Marianna airport.
We reached Mariannia at about 2700' and decided to try and make Frost before landing out. Got down to about 2000' over the fish ponds at Frost, saying my prayers.....beep, Beep, BEEP, B-B-B-Beep. My prayers are answered! Thermalled up to 4000' in a ray of sunlight between two dark clouds.
I could see FCY off to the North West in the sunshine, but there was a big dark nasty looking cloud with two horns, between me and FCY. If I could go between the horns underneath, I might make it. Nose down, speed up to 85 MPH, and the screaming Eagle heads for FCY. Rain starts to pelt the canopy, and the Eagle gets a bath. Increase the speed to 90 MPH and the Eagle bursts into the sunshine west of FCY over Rt. 1 at 3500'.
I radioed my position and found out that Yellowbird had landed out about 15 miles west of Wynne. Robert Williams and Charles Burnett had left FCY with the 1-23 trailer to get Phil Morgan.
I asked Bill Lawrence what time I did I release off tow? "12:33 PM", he radioed back. "What time is it now? 5:37 P.M. Does that mean I have been up over 5 hours? Even Lawyers should know if you count on your fingers from 12:37 to 5:47 you should have five fingers up! Nobody likes a smart-ass.
The LegalEagle completed its Silver duration (5 hours) and Silver Distance (48 miles). Steve Vihlen had to cut short his gold distance attempt, but got back to FCY safely.
It was a heck of a day!!!! Lee Robinson will be at FCY at about noon tomorrow if anyone wants to fly.
