On Airfoils (Jaroslav Lnenicka)
On Airfoils is a book about just that, airfoils! This 110 page, softbound book includes countless diagrams and illustrations. On Airfoils explains the nomenclature used in describing airfoils, provides airfoil cross-sections and coordinates. Learn how to understand airfoil polars and Reynolds numbers as well as the affects of changing airfoil thickness, camber and shape. An excellent addition to your aviation reference library.

Fundamentals of Hydro and Aeromechanics (Prandtl, Tietjens)
This book is a fluid-dynamics masterpiece. Maybe it's a little bit out dated now, but it's the book two or three generations of fluid scientists (30s-50s) used during their studies. Definitely a must-have for the serious theoretical fluid dynamicist, not the right book if you're looking for computational methods. -- A reader in Italy

Sailplanes 1945-1965 (Simons)
This is the second volume of Sailplanes by Martin Simons. It describes the extraordinary transformation in soaring from 1945-1965. To take advantage of discoveries in low drag aerodynamics it became necessary to develop new structures and methods of contruction. Almost every possible combination of materials and techniques was tried with varying success. A great variety of sailplane types appeared. As in Volume 1, the drawings illustrating this work are on a constant scale of 1:50 with cross sections and leading dimensions. Colour shading indicates the materials used. Numerous coloured and black and white photographs are included.

Segelflugzeuge: Vom Wolf zum Mini-Nimbus [Flugzeugbau bei Schempp-Hirth und Wolf Hirth 1935 bis Heute] (Selinger)
Translated into English, the title reads "Gliders: From the Wolf to the Mini Nimbus [Aircraft Construction by Schempp-Hirth and Wolf Hirth, 1935 until Today]". Although written in German, this is an invaluable source of historical and technical information on glider built by Schempp-Hirth up to the Mini-Nimbus. It contains listings of manufacture dates, registrations and original owners of every glider. A newer edition (ISBN 3613011042) takes the history through the Discus.

Slingsby Sailplanes (Simons)
Martin Simons has done an enormous service for all who have an interest in the history of soaring by telling the story of Fred Slingsby and the three dozen types of gliders his British firm produced over 5 decades. ... This unique book meets the needs of both ends of the spectrum, from the technical details to the narrative story about the people who produced the machines. His three view drawings are excellent, and he pays particular attention to showing the airfoils and cross sections used in the construction of the graceful machines. It stops short of showing the performance polars of these gliders, but he gives great insight into how they were flown and of the economics which dictate what designs are destined to thrive and those that are remembered only as a footnote. -- Cam Martin, Tehachapi, CA

How did two high school dropouts with less than $1,000 solve the greatest problem of the century in a matter of months, when teams of well-financed scientists and engineers couldn't find a solution after decades of trying? Some credit genius or just good luck, but Eppler says it was the application of a set of problem-solving principles the Wright Brothers learned at home and honed through several business ventures. These principles are every bit as applicable to today's business problems. (excerpt)

Unlocking the Sky: Glen Hammond Curtiss and the Race to Invent the Airplane (Shulman)
Who really should be credited with inventing the first heavier-than-air machine capable of carrying humans, and who should be credited with the various innovations that combined to make human flight practical? The answers to these questions are not as simple as you may imagine. The figures that receive most of the glory are the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss. Their contributions and their legal battles are legendary, but most people know little of what really happened. This book is an eye opener for those of us who only know that the Wright brothers were first in 1903 at Kitty Hawk. Most people versed in the events from 1903 to the outbreak of WWI, take sides with either the Wright brothers or Glenn Hammond Curtiss. This book illuminates the developments and legal battles relevant to aviation that marked that crucial period of innovation. It is an interesting read and very much worth while, though the author is unashamedly biased in favor of Glenn Curtiss. Shulman tells the story of Glenn Curtiss, a truly remarkable inventor who understood how to succeed by competing rather than seeking to monopolize an entire industry. - Jim Hendrix

1000 Km on an Appalachian Ridge by - VHS (Noyes)
David Noyes documents a 1 Km ridge flight flight from Sequachee Valley, near Knoxville, to Tom Knauff's place in Pennsylvania. He taped from a rotatable camera above the fuselage. The sound track is music and radio communications. At one point he had to thermal up to wave to get over obscured conditions below. There is a marvelous sequence where he's joined by another glider. The shot, into the setting sun, of that glider turning back for home is beautiful. If you've never ridge soared, this gives a good impression of the experience
