    All Creatures Series
  • All Creatures Great and Small - Series 1
     | 6 VHS Tapes | DVD |
Set in the serene beauty of the Yorkshire countryside, this classic follows the true-life adventures of veterinarian James Herriot. Includes all thirteen episodes from the first season.

  • All Creatures Great and Small - Series 2
     | 6 VHS Tapes |
This, 6 volume set, is a continuation of the exploits of veterinarian James Herriot who began practice in the Yorkshire dales of Great Britain in 1939. It follows the books written by Herriot and carries a first rate cast including Christopher Timothy as the english vet and Robert Hardy as his partner, mentor, and occasional tormentor. The subject matter, acting, and settings are first rate. For those who have read Harriot's books, these videos (produced by the BBC) will NOT be a disappointment. It is, of course, helpful to have viewed series 1 since the program was filmed in the chronological sequence of Harriot's life, from his graduation through his marriage and later life. I heartily recommend this series to anyone who loves animals or has an appreciation for english humor. The films are laced generously with both. -- Mark Reddaway

  • All Creatures Great and Small - Series 3
     | 6 VHS Tapes |
If you are a fan of All Creatures Great and Small (ACGS), you will LOVE this newest release. It simply is terrific. Series III goes deeper, with both the characters and the storylines. Relationships are explored and, against the background of 1939 WWII Britain, the thriving practice of Farnon and Herriot offers up loads of teats. James and Helen anchor the show but certainly do not steal it. James is the consummate professional and we see him develop into a true journeyman vet, with both mistakes and miracles mixed together. His day at Grandville's garden is priceless, and James's locum at the practice of Seigfried's pal, Stewie, sets up a "colorful" day at the dog races. Siegfried falls in love, and exposes his heart in more ways than one. Tristan comes into his own as a vet and a man, yet is still capable of the idiotic behavior we've come to love. We even get to see a glimpse into the life of the stoic Mrs. Hall - her compassion as she reaches out to her family during a crisis; her steely countenance as she lurches about the practice following an afternoon of sherry drinking with her friends. And once again, the delightfully quirky folk of the Yorkshire Dales provide a wealth of great storylines. Vol III is a must-have for the ACGS fan. It truly is like visiting with an old friend - no pretense and wonderfully encouraging. Buy Vol III. You won't be disappointed! -- Craig J O'Connor

  • All Creatures Great and Small / All Things Bright and Beautiful
     | Hardcover |
This book chronicles the adventures of a vet in pre-World War II Yorkshire, England. I must recommend it to anyone that loves animals, young and old! The tales are wildly hilarious and incredibly emotional at the same time. This is an excellent way to instill compassion in younger children and I have actually read it every Summer since I was a child. I must warn parents that there a some parts describing veterinary practices that may be a bit too much for very young children. It would be easy to leave out some chapters for a few years or buy James Herriot's Treasury for Children, which has been written with them in mind. Enjoy this book and savor its flavor! -- Kendra A. Montgomery-Blinn

  • James Herriot's Cat Stories
     | Hardcover | Hardcover, Large Print | Audio Cassette, Abridged |
Eight years after James Herriot's Dog Stories, the grand old British veterinarian and raconteur has compiled a similar but much shorter collection, in small gift-book format, of his favorite cat tales. Noting in the introduction that the status of the species has changed dramatically since he began practice in Yorkshire more than half a century ago, he states that cats are now arguably the most popular of all family pets. Of the 10 vignettes excerpted here from previous books, 3 tell how over an extended period of time the Herriots gradually tamed a pair of feral cats; the rest are humorous and/or touching stories about particular felines--and their people--encountered in the course of Herriot's predominantly large-animal work. Although they will recognize most, perhaps all, of the selections (one appeared in 1985 as the children's picture book Moses, the Kitten), Herriot's devotees, especially cat lovers, will applaud this encore. -- Barbara Duree, Booklist

  • James Herriot's Dog Stories
     | Paperback | Hardcover | Hardcover, Large Print | Audio Cassette, Abridged | Audio Cassette, Unabridged |
In this sequel to his 1994 Favorite Cat Stories, the estwhile veterinarian spins more loving yarns of the animal world; this time, though, the heart warming tales are about dogs, and dog lovers will certainly be satisfied. The nine stories that make up this slim volume range from moving and poignant (old dogs, dying dogs, dying dog owners) to clever and silly (fat, spoiled, pompous little dogs, absurdly doting owners) to fond reminiscences of Herriot's own pets. Herriot, who died in 1995, was the author of several books both for adults and for children and is popular for the love, warmth, and humor expressed in his work and the keen insights inherent in his writing, derived from years of veterinary work. This posthumous piece is no exception; fans of Herriot's previous works and animal lovers everywhere will enjoy this collection. -- Kathleen Hughes, Booklist

This audio collection is a repackaging of Herriot's Cat Stories, Dog Stories, and Animal Stories. I've never listened to any of Herriot's work (or read any for that matter!)--these stories are terrific. They remind me of Miss Read. • Sumner's Bull and Other Herriot Stories
     | Audio Cassette |
If you're like me, you may not always have time to sit down and read a great book, but you might have time to listen to a tape while driving in your car. "Sumner's Bull" was one of the first audio books that I ever heard, and it's still one of my favorites! Christopher Timothy brings James Herriot's stories to life with a vibrance that is so compelling, I literally forget that it is being read by one person--I know each of these characters! Herriot's stories are wonderful, fun, entertaining, enlightening, and moving--and Timothy's gift at communicating them makes the stories all the more enjoyable. I thoroughly recommend this audio version! -- John G., Palm Coast, FL

  • James Herriot: A Critical Companion
     | Hardcover |
This study examines James Herriot's five major books as carefully crafted volumes of autobiography based on the building block of the short story. In each of these works Herriot explores the fundamental choice of values underlying a happy and successful life. In his vision the bonds of affection and mutual dependence between all creatures, human and animal, form an enduring theme that lies at the heart of the choices he makes in his personal and professional life. This study will help the reader to understand the relationship between Herriot's stories and each book as a whole and to appreciate Herriot's work in the context of twentieth-century anxieties about identity and meaning.

  • The Real James Herriot: A Memoir of My Father
     | Paperback | Hardcover | Hardcover, Large Print | Audio Cassette, Abridged |
James Alfred Wight, "Alf" to his friends and family, was better known to the world as James Herriot. Arguably the world's most famous veterinarian, Alf was unable to use his real name when he signed his first book contract because it was considered advertising and regarded as unprofessional conduct; it also carried the penalty of suspension from the profession. So Alf borrowed the name James Herriot from the goalkeeper of a soccer match he was watching on television. The rest is a literary history that nearly all readers are aware of, but few are familiar with the man behind the beloved stories. Jim Wight, Herriot's son, not only knew his father as a parent but as a fellow veterinarian, as he followed in his father's footsteps and joined his Yorkshire veterinary practice. Wight is, therefore, supremely qualified to write a biography of his father in his roles as author, colleague, and friend. By delving into letters compulsively saved by both Herriot and his mother, old records from the veterinary practice, and the memories of those who knew him best, Wight presents a portrait of Alf that is both the story of James Herriot and of how he created him, manipulating dates and events from his own life to create Herriot's stories. Wight's descriptions of his father with Donald Sinclair ("Siegfried Farnon") alone are worth the price of the book, especially as this twosome continued to practice medicine together until their deaths in 1995. A fascinating look behind the scenes of the life of "James Herriot," this book will be eagerly sought out by the fans of Alf Wight's stories and is a worthy companion to those beloved books. -- Nancy Bent, Booklist

  • James Herriot's Yorkshire Revisited
     | Hardcover |
James Herriot lived and worked in North Yorkshire, England, for over fifty years, first and foremost as a vet, but in his later years as one of the world's most successful authors. Twenty years ago, the bestselling book, James Herriot's Yorkshire combined hundreds of color photos with a moving essay highlighting the places he loved so much - from the lush valley meadows in the springtime to the remote villages during the depths of winter. Now, two decades later, the Herriot estate has authorized the creation of a new book on Yorkshire that matches the original in both charm and grace. Complete with an introduction by James Herriot's son, Jim Wight, James Herriot's Yorkshire Revisited brings together never-before-seen photos with evocative excerpts from Herriot's eight major works.
